Mayor Bloomberg Cuts Ribbon at Studio in a School Exhibition Opening
As Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg was about to cut the ribbon at the opening of Artists’ Eyes: Children’s Art from Studio in a School on March 7, he declared, “The creative energy in the room is awe inspiring!”
More than 200 children across the city are represented in this charming show at the 1285 Avenue of the Americas Art Gallery. Featured are landscapes, self-portraits, figures in motion, cityscapes, animals in habitats, experimentations with shapes, and observational studies of fruits and vegetables. The young artists express their vision of the world through a variety of media: drawing, printmaking, painting, collage, and sculpture. The exhilaration was palpable as students, their families, and friends eagerly walked through the gallery to find their artwork on display. Galilea, a fourth grader from P.S. 119 in the Bronx was there with her parents. Standing proudly in front of her exquisite black and white study of apples, she exclaimed, “This is so exciting! I never thought my artwork would be in a gallery.” She went on to explain that the drawing, an outcome of STUDIO’s newest initiative Art & Healthy Living was, “all about light and dark.” Her objective was to convey to the viewer the experience of tasting the apple. STUDIO’s artist instructor at PS 119, Susan Stair, would surely have been proud to hear this. STUDIO’s many friends, including Kate Levin, Commissioner of Cultural Affairs; City Council members Jimmy Van Bramer, Domenic Recchia, Jr., Gale Brewer; and artist Christo, joined STUDIO Founder, Agnes Gund, and Chairman of the Board, Richard Roob, in celebrating the talent of these young artists. Artists’ Eyes will remain on view at the 1285 Avenue of the Americas Art Gallery until May 13, 2011. Gallery hours: Monday-Friday, 8a.m.-6p.m. |
